The low-altitude economy has become a strategic emerging industry in China. Drones are widely adopted in aerial photography, fire rescue, agricultural plant protection, logistics delivery, power line inspection and many other scenarios with expanding application scale. As the core power component of drones, batteries directly determine flight endurance, operational safety and overall equipment costs. Most mainstream drones are equipped with lithium polymer batteries built with intelligent BMS (Battery Management System), featuring high energy density, lightweight design and stable charge-discharge performance. However, lithium battery cells are highly sensitive to temperature, charge-discharge cycles and storage conditions. Many drone operators encounter rapid capacity degradation, bulging batteries and drastically shortened flight time due to improper maintenance. Standardized daily maintenance can greatly extend the cycle life of batteries and eliminate potential flight hazards. Based on industry practical standards, this article sorts out a full set of standardized maintenance specifications for drone batteries.

1. Battery Storage: Four Core Requirements

Storage conditions are the key factor affecting battery aging; improper long-term storage will cause irreversible damage to battery cells.

Keep well-ventilated and dry, away from moisture

Humid air corrodes battery terminals, damages internal cell structures and accelerates internal resistance growth. Batteries must be stored in dry and ventilated areas. Avoid damp environments such as basements, sealed storage boxes and open outdoors. For long-term idle storage, seal batteries with special moisture-proof bags to isolate water vapor erosion.

Strictly control ambient temperature, avoid extreme hot and cold

Batteries require mild and stable storage temperature. Do not leave batteries under direct blazing sun, inside closed cars or outdoors in frigid weather. Low temperatures reduce cell activity sharply, while high temperatures accelerate electrolyte decomposition. Both extreme conditions lead to permanent performance degradation of batteries.

Keep away from heat sources and flammable & explosive materials

Store batteries away from direct sunlight, heating equipment, gasoline, cartons and other combustibles to lower the risk of battery thermal runaway and ensure storage safety.

Store separately to prevent extrusion and collision

Handle batteries with care. Do not stack heavy objects on batteries or squeeze cells, which may cause shell breakage and internal short circuits.

2. Precise Battery Level Management to Avoid Overcharging & Over-Discharging

Most battery failures stem from incorrect battery level management. Separate standards apply for short-term use and long-term storage.

Remove batteries right after flight

Drones still have tiny standby power consumption after shutdown. If batteries stay installed inside idle drones for a long time, deep over-discharge will occur and damage cells. Always detach batteries immediately after each flight for separate storage.

Adjust charge level to standard storage capacity (40%-65%) for long idle periods

If no flight plan is scheduled for over 10 days, discharge batteries to 40%-65% by low-altitude hovering or powering on without loads.

Long-term full-charge storage: High pressure saturates cells, speeding up aging and raising risks of bulging and overheating.

Long-term zero-charge storage: Continuous self-discharge drops voltage below the safety threshold, leading to deep dormancy, battery lock or permanent scrappage in severe cases.

Complete full charge-discharge cycles regularly

Perform one full charge-discharge cycle every 2 to 3 months: fully drain the battery then recharge to rated voltage. This activates internal active substances of cells and stabilizes battery capacity. If batteries enter dormancy due to long-term low-power storage, use a dedicated charger for continuous charging to wake them up.

Monthly supplementary charge-discharge maintenance

During long-term storage, complete one supplementary charge-discharge operation every month: fully charge to rated voltage then discharge to standard storage capacity to maintain cell activity and prevent severe capacity loss.

3. Charging Specifications: Three Common Mistakes to Avoid When Charging Hot Batteries

Batteries heat up after flights; improper charging is the top cause of battery bulging.

Cool batteries down to room temperature before charging

Battery internal temperature rises after high-intensity flights. Place batteries in cool, ventilated areas to fully cool to ambient temperature prior to charging. Never charge overheated cells to prevent thermal damage.

Use original matching dedicated chargers

Drones of different models carry batteries with distinct voltage and current parameters. Only use dedicated matching original chargers. Inferior third-party chargers deliver unstable current and unbalanced cell voltage, resulting in overcharging damage. Always charge batteries on an open flame-retardant surface and keep away from fabrics, cartons and other combustibles.

Handle batteries gently during charging

Insert and remove batteries with soft movements; avoid heavy squeezing or dropping to prevent cell deformation and loose charging ports. Monitor battery status throughout charging. Cut off power and discontinue use immediately if abnormal overheating, bulging or strange odors appear.

4. Special Maintenance Plan for Long-Term Storage

For seasonal operations such as plant protection and mapping where batteries stay idle for months, follow extra protective measures:

Seal with moisture-proof bags to isolate water vapor and dust;

Test voltage monthly and perform supplementary charge-discharge to maintain standard storage power;

Visually inspect battery shells regularly. Scrap batteries immediately and ban further flight once bulging, cracking, liquid leakage or deformation is found;

Fully charge batteries and complete one charge-discharge cycle before reuse after long storage.
